Private Dave at Gettysburg

Hi.  I'm Father Dave and, yes, that is me in the pic.

I'm a parish priest from Sydney (yep, in Australia) and I am editor of the Fighting Fathers US Civil War ebook Library.

You're probably asking, 'How did an Australian ever get that interested in American history?'  Well, let me tell you...

I spend a lot of my time working with young people - young people with problems.

People ask me all the time, 'Dave, what is the biggest problem we are facing with our young people.  Is it drugs, violence, homelessness, unemployment?'

My answer is always the same.  While all of these are real issues, I believe that the real problem, at the basis of most of these other problems, is that the young people I deal with regularly live in a world no bigger than themselves.  They have forgotten, or they have never known, what it means to be committed to a country, a community or a cause that is greater than they are.

I see my main role with young persons as trying to model a form of adulthood that stands for something greater than self.  And that's why I'm always looking for other adult role models that I can point our young people to - persons of courage and integrity, who believed in a cause bigger than themselves.  That's how I got caught up in the stories of some of the great men and women of the American Civil War.

In July 2003, through the generosity of local sponsors, I was able to take a group of young men from the streets of Sydney to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for the 140th anniversary of the great battle, followed by a further two weeks in Virginia, walking in the footsteps of some of the great men of the era.

Yes, it was a life-changing tour.  Young lives were impacted and horizons were expanded.  I hope one day to be able to offer another group the same experience but, realistically, this sort of thing is not easy to organise, let alone to afford.  That's when I realised that I needed some way of making the stories of these heroic figures easily accessible to everyone.  That's when I started work on:

I followed Armistead
until I saw him fall

The charge of Pickett's, Pettigrew's and Trimble's divisions, that took place on July 3rd 1863, was the climax of the battle of Gettysburg, and perhaps of the whole American Civil War.

From the point of view of those who made the charge, it was a complete failure. Yet generations later we still remember it as one of the finest displays of heroism in the face of impossible odds.

These are the diary entries of those who survived the charge, including that of Lieutenant John Lewis, who crossed the wall with Armistead, and follwed him until he saw his General fall.

Joshua Chamberlain
on Little Round Top

Few military figures have caught the public imagination as forcefully as have Civil War hero Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

The professor from Maine, who rose to become a General by the end of the Civil War, received the Medal of Honor for his action in holding a small, rocky hill on the left flank of the Union line at Gettysburg on July 2nd, 1863. That hill was known as Little Round Top

Here Chamberlain tells the story in his own words, in an article that was first published in Hearst's Magazine in 1913.

Stonewall Jackson's
Letters Home

Jackson was a man admired by his peers for his fearlessness in battle, and yet awkward in his adult relationships. He was a lecturer by trade, but with a mind somewhat unsuited for academia. Regularly brilliant in his military manoeuvres, he was also quite capable of inexplicable errors. And then we have the figure that appears in his letters to Anna - tender and playful, shy yet romantic - a man whose great loves were his family and his garden.

Putting together the pieces that make up the Jackson puzzle is a daunting task. Certainly though no depiction is complete that does not take into account his letters home.

Abraham Lincoln's
Wartime Speeches

Whatever can be said about Abraham Lincoln, he was certainly a clever man and a brilliant speaker.  These are his wartime orations. The best known of them is the shortest - the Gettysburg Address - though the reader will find that there are plenty of other gems to mine from the mind of Abraham Lincoln beyond those few well-chosen words.

Included in this collection too is the 'Letter to Mrs Bixby', made famous again more recenty through the movie 'Saving Private Ryan'.
